Product Description - Tecsound 35, 50, SY50, SY70, 100 and SY50-ALU
Tecsound membranes are polymer-based, asphalt-free, high density, synthetic soundproofing membranes, that offer good acoustic insulation in different building elements. The membranes have extremely high visco-elasticity as well as being extremely flexible even in cold temperatures.
This material has excellent sound insulating properties. Many construction materials and techniques do not provide enough damping. Rigid sheet materials such as plasterboard absorb little sound energy because they tend to vibrate and re-radiate sound on the other side quite effectively. However, Tecsound acoustic membrane has tremendous density and mass while remaining extremely flexible. It is acoustically better than lead of the same surface mass, so will help absorb sound energy far more efficiently.
While some systems rely on visco-elastic glues to provide damping the results achieved will vary greatly depending on the application of the glue. Is it too thick? Is it too thin? Has it been applied evenly and consistently?
Visco-elastic glues do not add any extra mass to a system and at the end of the day the best way to reduce bass transmission is by having a heavyweight, heavily damped, mass/spring system. Tecsound acoustic membranes provide the best of both worlds: high additional mass and high damping that can be applied uniformly over 100% of the area to be treated.
Fire Resistance (Certificate Number Applus LGAI 10/102164-2802 Part 1 & 2)
Please Note: This product has superior fire retardancy over and above other 'mass loaded vinyl' imitations which often claim to be fire retardant when in fact they are self-extinguishing. Quite often, products that are rated as self-extinguishing actually means that they can still produce harmful gas release, still produce flammable droplets, and the product may only extinguish itself after the flame source has been removed and generally this is because so much toxic smoke is produced that the oxygen supply is cut. In the current climate a single category fire classification of "self-extinguishing" is pretty much obsolete as it can be misleading and potentially dangerous.
Tecsound is fire rated better than the existing UK Class0 classification. Its fire certification was performed by Applus LGAI. The product conditioning was tested in compliance with Standard UNE-EN 13238:2002 "Fire Reaction Tests for construction materials. Conditioning procedures and general rules for the selection of substrates."
The Small Burner Test was carried out in compliance with Standard UNE-EN-ISO 11925-2:2002. During the test, no product inflammation was observed or any fall of material onto the filter paper.
The Single Burning Item Test (SBI) was carried out in accordance with Standard UNE-EN 13823:2002. This test, amongst other criteria, determines the total heat released, the velocity of the heat released, the amount of smoke released and the velocity of the smoke production. During this test no release of inflamed material was observed i.e. no burning droplets were observed and a very limited amount of combustion gas was released. Worthy of note is that the sample tested was the adhesive backed version !

Which way round?
The material has a reinforcing scrim facing on one side. When stapling over a framework you want the scrim side facing you. When laying on a floor have the scrim side facing you. When using multiple layers you may find the material will want to tack to itself so keep scrim side against brown side. When sticking between plasterboard sheets, stick the brown side to the first board.
Important: The material itself remains flexible down to -20°C; however the adhesive backing on the self-adhesive version (SY50) will degrade if left in temperatures approaching zero
